Winton Elementary is a 52,000 square foot, three section, K-5 elementary school located on a small, 2.5 acre site in downtown Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The new building replaced the original 1929 school while still maintaining its spirit and character. We accomplished this through using similar building forms with gables, details, and windows; and materials, such as the brick. The new school consists of two stories with a majority of the classrooms on the upper level, connected by an elevator which provides ADA access to all levels. Another unique feature of this building is the gymnasium, which sits below the main floor due to the building’s intersection with the hill behind the school. We replaced the old half sized gym with a new full sized gym while still maintaining the sunken feature of the original.
